CAL INVADERS

Invaders-PIBXII-Orchestra-Finals-021

In 1937 a group of friends came together under a pavilion at the Queen’s Park Oval and formed a steelband which they called the ‘Oval Boys’.

In the 1940’s the band moved across the street to 147 Tragarete Road and was renamed 'Invaders' after the U.S. war movie ‘Night Invaders’. It was here that young Ellie Mannette sank the steeldrum, created 6 out of the 9 instruments and discovered that the sweetness of each note can be brought out by putting rubbers on the sticks.

In 2007 the Trinidad and Tobago Government recognised the historical contributions that were born at the Invaders panyard, and consequently deemed the location a national heritage site. Invaders' repertoire is a compilation of a variety of music ranging from contemporary to retro compositions. The diversity of their music combined with charismatic chorography is Invaders' signature of dominance on the entertainment platform.

Their dynamism and performing talent resulted in them being proclaimed champions at the 2009 QPCC Clash of Steel repertoire competition in Trinidad, and the 2009 Regional Clash of Bands competition at the Kensington Oval, Barbados.

Invaders is a global entertainer and cultural ambassador whose performances in the USA, South America and the Caribbean have promoted Trinidad and Tobago as the centre for Caribbean music. On five consecutive occasions 2005-2009 they have represented this region at World Fest; America’s Largest International Festival and they were a main attraction at the Festival of Nations at Dollywood Park, Tennessee, USA.

Invaders is the recipient of: The Chaconia Medal (Gold), a Proclamation from New York City, and awards from The Northern Region of Pantrinbago and the Port of Spain City Co-operation in recognition of the band’s contribution to the development of the steelpan.

This year Caribbean Airlines Invaders Steel Orchestra recently hosted its first concert “Versatility” at the National Academy for the Performing Arts in Port-of-Spain under the musical directorship of Arddin Herbert. This musical production received glowing accolades from patrons and the media.

Caribbean Airlines Invaders Steel Orchestra is managed by Michael Dinchong. The band’s Music Coordinator is Desiree Myers and its Music Director is Arddin Herbert.
